LATITUDE Gallery is pleased to present our first exhibition of work by Artist Zoe Li. Exhibition: Only my hair have been able to get free. Curated by Shihui Zhou, Artist Zoe Li’s several recent works will be on view till 11th of December, 2020.

Exhibition Name quoted from Leonard Cohen’s poem “The Suit.” “I comb my hair for possibilities” is another line from Leonard Cohen’s poem, also strongly echoing to Zoe’s work Comb Machine: the regulation of hair, 2020. It is hardly surprising that not only Leonard but many artists nowadays like Zoe employs hair in the service of their artwork. Few artists have not experienced the sort of desperation that drives scribblers of weaving, installations and poetry to consider body parts as devices first and a machine for living second.

Zoe's creative practice investigates the abstract roles of human beings in a technological world. She has experienced various cultural environments, which drew her to explore the different existences of individuals in a philosophic and sociological sense. Often deconstructing things, she explores the position of “self” within a system, which might be its cultural and historical heritage, a virtual space, or the physical world.

In the exhibition, she presents some recent investigations in various forms: performance, video, installation, web-based media, and interactive media such as the Comb Machine: the regulation of hair, 2020 and A box life, 2020.

Her goal, which is based on self-experience and research, is to shift perspectives away from normality as well as to raise questions to the public. The viewer is confronted with questions regarding preconceived ideas and the superficial aesthetic we take for granted.
